Calculation Guide & Reference

Work Hours, Timesheet Calculations & Payroll Mathematics

Calculate work hours between times with lunch break deductions, weekly timesheets with 1.5x overtime pay, decimal hours conversion, and time math.

Standardized Mathematical Formula
Net_Hours = (End_Time - Start_Time - Unpaid_Break) / 60 mins

Determines billable hours by converting clock timestamps to minutes, subtracting unpaid lunch breaks, and dividing into decimal hours.

Variables:
Start_Time:Clock in timestamp
End_Time:Clock out timestamp
Unpaid_Break:Lunch / rest break in minutes
Gross_Pay:Regular_Hours * Wage + Overtime_Hours * (Wage * 1.5)
How It Works (Step-by-Step)
  • 1Enter Shift Start Time and End Time (supports 12h AM/PM and 24h military time).
  • 2Input unpaid lunch or meal break duration in minutes (e.g. 30 or 45 mins).
  • 3Optionally input your hourly wage to compute gross shift earnings.
  • 4Use the Weekly Timesheet tab to log Monday through Friday/Sunday with automatic overtime 1.5x calculation.
  • 5Use the Decimal Converter tab to convert between standard clock minutes and payroll decimals (e.g. 7h 45m = 7.75h).
Real-World Numerical Example
Calculating an 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM Shift with 45-Minute Lunch

An employee works from 08:30 to 17:15 with a 45-minute unpaid lunch at $32/hour.

Gross time: 8 hours and 45 minutes (525 minutes).
Subtract 45 minutes unpaid break = 480 net minutes.
Net hours = 480 / 60 = 8.00 decimal hours.
Gross earnings: 8.00 hours * $32.00/hr = $256.00.
Result: 8 hours 0 minutes (8.00 decimal hours) with $256.00 gross earnings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Divide 20 minutes by 60 = 0.333. Adding 7 gives 7.333 decimal hours.

If end time is earlier than start time (e.g. 10 PM to 6 AM), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to cross the midnight threshold.

Yes, the Weekly Timesheet tab lets you log clock-in and clock-out times for each day Monday through Sunday, with automatic totals and 1.5x overtime applied past 40 hours.

Under standard Fair Labor Standards rules, hours worked beyond 40 in a single workweek are paid at 1.5x the regular hourly rate; the calculator applies this automatically once your weekly total exceeds 40 hours.

Set the unpaid break field to 0 minutes — the full shift duration is then counted as net working hours with no deduction.
