Prime Factorization & Primality Mathematics

Prime factorization calculator breaks any integer down into its prime factors and checks whether it's prime or composite.

Standardized Mathematical Formula
N = p₁^a × p₂^b × ... × pₙ^z

Every integer greater than 1 has a unique prime factorization — trial division by increasing primes (starting at 2) repeatedly divides out each prime factor until only 1 remains.

Variables:
N:The integer being factored
p₁...pₙ:Prime factors of N
How It Works (Step-by-Step)
  • 1Enter a positive integer.
  • 2View whether it's prime or composite, and its full prime factorization.
Real-World Numerical Example
Factoring 360

Find the prime factorization of 360.

360 ÷ 2 = 180, ÷ 2 = 90, ÷ 2 = 45 (three factors of 2).
45 ÷ 3 = 15, ÷ 3 = 5 (two factors of 3).
5 is itself prime.
Result: 360 = 2³ × 3² × 5 — a composite number.
Calculation Best Practices & Tips
Examine the discriminant (b² - 4ac) before solving quadratics to instantly know if roots are real, distinct, repeated, or complex.
In statistical analysis, always check both the mean and median to identify if data distribution is skewed by outliers.
When calculating percentage changes, ensure you divide by the original starting baseline value: ((New - Old) / Old) * 100.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Divide repeatedly by the smallest prime that divides evenly (starting with 2), then move to the next prime once it no longer divides evenly, continuing until you're left with 1 — the primes you divided by (with their counts) are the factorization.

A number is prime if its only prime factorization is itself to the first power (no smaller factors exist) — this calculator determines that automatically as part of the factorization process.
