Standardized Mathematical Formula
Aspect Ratio = W ÷ GCD(W,H) : H ÷ GCD(W,H) | Scaled Height = (New Width × H) ÷ W

The aspect ratio is the width and height reduced to their simplest whole-number form, found by dividing both by their greatest common divisor (GCD). To scale to a new width while preserving proportions, the new height follows from the same width-to-height ratio.

A 1920×1080 Resolution

A video is shot at 1920×1080 pixels — what's the aspect ratio, and what height matches a 1280px-wide export?

•GCD(1920, 1080) = 120.
•Aspect ratio: 1920÷120 : 1080÷120 = 16:9.
•Scaled height at 1280px wide: (1280 × 1080) ÷ 1920 = 720px.
Result: The resolution is a 16:9 aspect ratio; scaling to 1280px wide gives a 1280×720 export.
